Dr. Chelsea Haramia Appointed Co-Director of the New Discovery and Futures Lab at the SETI Institute
Earlier this year Dr. Chelsea Haramia, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Science and Thought (CST) at the University of Bonn, was appointed Co-Director of the newly established Discovery and Futures Lab at the SETI Institute. Together with astronomer and science communicator Lucian Walkowicz, she is shaping the Lab’s strategic vision and research agenda.
The Discovery and Futures Lab explores the scientific, philosophical, social, ethical, and planetary questions surrounding the process of discovering life beyond Earth. As a supplement to the valuable science of searching, the Lab examines interdisciplinary questions including how such discoveries might be interpreted, communicated, and understood across different societies and cultures.
Drawing on her expertise in the ethics of space exploration, Dr. Haramia contributes to the Lab’s interdisciplinary mission of investigating the broader implications of scientific discovery. Its research addresses questions such as how societies might respond to evidence of extraterrestrial life, how uncertainty should be communicated to the public, and what ethical, political, cultural, and environmental challenges such discoveries could raise.
Bringing together scholars from fields including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the Discovery and Futures Lab serves as a platform for collaborative research, fellowships, workshops, and public engagement. By fostering dialogue across disciplines, the Lab seeks to deepen our understanding of the many dimensions of cosmic discoveries and of humanity’s place in the universe.
